I don’t know which is a better indicator of snow: The local weather forecast or the rush of people to the grocery store. Regardless of whether or not it comes to fruition, the mere anticipation of snow can be exciting for children. Snow provides the potential for experiencing a day off from school, building a snowman, and sledding.

Snow also provides a wonderful opportunity for parents to share spiritual principles with their children.

• Take time to examine freshly fallen snow with your child.
• Have a conversation about how clean, bright, and white the blanket of snow makes everything appear.
• Ask your child if he or she can remember what is under the snow.

Then, read together Isaiah 1:18: “Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

Explain to your child that God offers forgiveness to all who are willing to repent and follow Him in obedience. Just as the blanket of snow covers the ground below, Christ’s blood covers our sins, erasing them—making us white as snow. Explain to your child that God uses guilt to convict us of sin. Where conviction of sin can cause us to feel dirty, repentance and God’s forgiveness cleanse us from guilt, making us clean as freshly fallen snow.
