News headlines concerning the economy, unemployment, health care, etc. have left no doubt that Americans are experiencing challenging times. Then the tragic earthquake occurred in Haiti and our perspective changed. The enormous personal loss to the Haitian people caused many in America to reconsider those things they had perhaps begun to take for granted.

What is it about a tragedy that causes us to think differently? What situations move you to reconsider your perspective?

Regardless of the situation or circumstance, God desires that His children consistently strive to see things from His perfect perspective; to have a mind set on eternal things (Colossians 3:2). When our minds are fixed, focused on truth rather than the appearance of circumstance we are reminded that God is always at work on our behalf (John 5:17).

Because God’s ways are so much higher than ours, it is often difficult for our minds to comprehend how He is working amidst the circumstances we face. This is precisely why we need to fix our thoughts on Christ. Remaining focused on the character of Christ prompts us to acknowledge that He works all things, even catastrophes and suffering, for our greater good (Romans 8:28), and He does so purposefully to reveal His glory (Exodus 14:4).

What will you choose to focus on today: the appearance of circumstance or the faithfulness of Christ? Fluctuating emotions or absolute truth? Possible loss or potential victory?
