“Never stop for groceries when you’re hungry.” Have you ever heard that statement?

It’s founded on studies that show that impulse buying results in greater purchases and more consumption of high-fat, high-calorie, and high-cost foods. In addition, people who shop when they are hungry are more likely to purchase things they don’t need or things they would not normally buy.

The same can be true in other areas of our lives. Consider for a moment what happens when we are spiritually malnourished. Rather than feasting on the Word of God which promises to completely satisfy, we choose to consume the empty things of the world, leaving us wanting. Also, we can make decisions that come at a cost to us personally because of the resulting consequences which are often difficult to reverse. In addition, people who are spiritually hungry are more likely to indulge in things that reflect the flesh rather than God’s best for them. They do things they wouldn’t do if lead by the Spirit.

The Bible refers to Jesus as “The Bread of Life”. Psalm 107:9 says “He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Are you allowing yourself to go spiritually hungry or are you being consistently filled with the Word of God?
